#GivingTuesday

Have you considered who you'll be supporting this #GivingTuesday?

I'll help you! Please consider supporting the American Cancer Society this #GivingTuesday

I'll be happy to give you a few reasons why this is the best value for your dollar!

Statistically speaking, 1 in 3 of us will get cancer so if it's not you that gets the awful diagnosis, likely you'll be caring for someone that does. Why not fund the work that's being done to eliminate cancer right here in our community? In Illinois alone, there are 20 active research grants totaling 13,476,200!

Besides research, we are increasing cancer screening rates, increasing HPV vaccine uptake (HPV causes ~36,000 cancers each year in the US), forming the Illinois Lung Cancer Roundtable, and forming a local transportation consortium in central, IL.

Additionally, the American Cancer Society recently awarded $30,000 in transportation funding to local health systems in central, IL to address transportation barriers associated with missed treatment.

Scars, Mars...It's My Warrior Wear!

"So, I guess I'll just strip right here..." as I stood in front of a mirror I asked the photographer to bring, in my typical 'I'm a girly girl but not..' fashion. I don't have a portable mirror, hadn't had the time to try on and figure out my outfits, and curled my hair for it to be flattened the moment I walked outside. But we were rollin' with it. I think Zach awkwardly replied with a mumble and walked the other direction.

We lose a lot through this journey. I lost a ton of hair, I lost my breasts, I lost my short-term memory, the ability to sleep in the sleeping position I'd slept in for decades, I lost my tubes, a giant portion of my womanhood, and so much more. Modesty? Yea, you can bet my fluffy ass any modesty leftover from childbirth is dead and gone.

I've written about it before, but we gain a lot through this journey too. I've gained a support group and friends and relationships that mean so much more than any of those I lost by going this route. I was a feminist before but holy hell, if this didn't give me a new profound respect for the WOMAN species as a whole, there's nothing else that could. There aren't even enough or strong enough words to describe how much these warriors face, come out on top, and still smash at life while walking the path. Regardless of the outcome, these woman are a force to be reckoned with. And therefore, I realize now that I am one of them! I am finding an entirely new version of self-love and am 100% unapologetic about how that may impact others. I love it. It's beautiful. You should try it too! PS, you don't even need a reason to - just do it!

So why did I want to do these photos? From a tangible perspective, I have that hideous, half-gone tattoo that I have a vision for. But I wanted photos of my scarring beforehand. From a non-tangible perspective, I hope they are a constant reminder for decades to come to myself and all those that read this that our scars, our wrinkles, our dimples, our gaps, our sags, our discolored, our whatevers are all of our imperfections that create our beauty.

"I am strong, I am beautiful, I am intelligent, I am kind. And I won't let anyone tell me differently." My daughter and I have said this together nightly since the day she was born and I share this as my gift to you!

PHOTO CREDIT! Let's talk about how HOT these photos are! Zach Adams with 1221 Photography really knocked this boudoir session out of the park. While modesty is nil, posing in string things for a stranger is not something I was super comfortable with doing either. Zach handled my vulnerability beautifully! He captured all I wanted to capture. And he couldn't have been more respectful.

I can hardly wait to get my new ink and have session 2 done.

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Chances are, if you're reading my latest blog post, it's not you that needs increased awareness (and for that I'm sorry :( but I'm glad you're here). I hope I'm wrong - I hope I have many guest faces here!

October is breast cancer awareness month! For obvious reasons, this one hits close to home for me. I am summarizing below some really important stuff for anyone who loves a woman to participate in and share. The American Cancer Society is full of the most amazing resources for prevention, awareness, screening, and treatment resources.

Did you know, American Cancer Society has a free, virtual support program for breast cancer patients and survivors? It's called Reach to Recovery - learn more here.

All month long, I am raising money for breast cancer research. Will you join in this fight? Donate, share, however you can help. <3

Schedule your mammogram today or encourage a friend to! And ask them to keep passing the message forward.

My first previvorversary!

I've lost so much, but I've gained more...

On July 2, 2020 I lost my breasts, what I felt like was a huge part of my womanhood, feeling on my entire torso, and relationships, time, and so much energy. After getting me through my surgeries, I lost my companion, Joshua, on May 18, 2021. What I gained, though, is infinite and priceless. I gained the confidence to wear my flaws proudly; I earned them after  all. I gained the self-love to set boundaries; boundaries with people, situations, my job, and myself. And overall, I gained a new perspective on life that leaves me feeling refreshed.

If you're new here, I'll provide the skinny on me..

I created this blog because when I first started planning for my preventive double mastectomy, I remember trying to mentally, emotionally, and physically prepare and feeling SO lost and overwhelmed. Even my surgeon to this day can't comprehend how difficult this journey is for her patients.

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 7 years old and she was 32. She survived! And then, we learned in my early adulthood that she, my sister, and I all carry the BRCA1 mutation. So, it was my care plan to become a previvor before turning 30. I basically made it. In October, 2019, I got word that I could have the surgery and found a surgeon that I felt was worth gambling on. On July 2, 2020 I had a preventive double mastectomy (6+ hour surgery). On July 21, I had DIEP reconstruction (17.5 hour surgery) followed by a 5-day ICU stay, and then on December 9, 2020, I had my tubes removed and revisions done up top (5 hour surgery). I forgot to mention above that I also lost my memory and much of my hair :) It was HARD. Mentally and physically preparing my life and my home, in the middle of a pandemic no less, was HARD. I'd done a lot of difficult things in life and made very challenging decisions but this one took the cake. Now that I've made it to the DIEP side, though, I wouldn't change a thing.

It was a solid 12 weeks before I felt like myself after DIEP. It was a solid 5 months before I could wear jeans and I felt comfortable tying my shoes again. And at the year mark, I tried doing crunches today and am still struggling. I SO wish I'd had physical therapy! I let my surgeon make me feel like an idiot for wanting it.

On that note, I knew my lifestyle would be different post-DIEP. You know that saying, 'you are what you eat?' It couldn't be more true. I only put whole things in and in turn, gone are the days I feel sluggish, bloated, etc. I exercise daily (that isn't new) and really prioritize my own wellness.

After spending a year as a patient, I decided to jump out of the 'healthcare' boat and into a different world. I am now officially working in the fight against cancer. As a previvor, I feel incredibly humbled and honored to serve in this way. Will you help us fight? Donate online.

Check it out! Be sure to find my helpful links post. Over the course of the next few months, I hope to have everything better organized now that the dust has settled but in the meantime, please bare with me :)

Reach to Recovery - American Cancer Society launches breast cancer support program

I'm so excited about this program so I'm sharing it with you all! Find out more here: https://reach.cancer.org/

If you have breast cancer, you may want to connect with someone who knows what you’re feeling – someone who has “been there.” Through the American Cancer Society Reach To Recovery program, you can have an online chat or a phone conversation with a trained volunteer who has survived breast cancer and understands what you are going through.

Our volunteers provide one-on-one support to help you cope with treatment, side effects, talking with friends and family, working during treatment, and more. Volunteers do not provide medical advice. Reach To Recovery is a free program.

Reach To Recovery supports people wherever they are in their breast cancer journey.

  • Facing a possible diagnosis of breast cancer
  • Recently diagnosed with breast cancer
  • Considering or have had a lumpectomy or mastectomy
  • Considering breast reconstruction
  • Have arm swelling (lymphedema) from treatment
  • Undergoing or have completed treatment

My cup runneth over....

As many of you know, navigating the healthcare system in the USA is not an easy task. Even as a healthcare worker for almost 13 years. After experiencing this journey through the lens of a patient and as a healthcare worker myself and balancing screening financial burdens, having essentially no support from the healthcare system on which decision is best for me for my BRCA1 mutation, going through the planning of surgery(ies) alone, and having to navigate the insurance denials, appealing denials, deductibles, and lack of follow up post-surgery, I've decided to join the fight against cancer in a professional capacity.

I'm super thrilled to be working for a customer-focused organization that believes in the power of science and research, collaboration and progressive/innovative movement, and utilizing their team members to their best abilities for the benefit of the common good.

In this new role in the fight against cancer, I serve central and southern Illinois by identifying and fostering strong partnerships with engaged stakeholders who are interested in joining the fight against cancer and helping us tackle cancer from every angle.

This past Friday, I had the opportunity to share my connection to cancer with a group of phenomenal (they are phenomenal people, not sure they're all phenomenal golfers ;) ) golfers who attend an annual golf outing with costume-dressed individuals to have fun and raise money for the American Cancer Society. I was grateful for the invitation and shared my connection to cancer with the KFM Cancer Classic Hall of Fame Inductees and their families. I had the privilege of being followed by Mr. Bacon himself who introduced one of the inductees.

These events are fun and easy to host. I hope to bring awareness to the feasibility of such events and partnerships right here in the communities I'm serving.

Cheers to 5 years

Cheers! It's almost been 5 year since my preventive (sometimes called prophylactic) double mastectomy.  That surgery was July 2, 2020. ...
